Congratulations to Professor Catherine Whistler, Keeper of Western Art at the Ashmolean Museum and Supernumerary Fellow, on the award of a British Academy Medal.

Professor Whistler has been awarded the British Academy Medal聽for聽Venice and Drawing, 1500-1800: Theory, Practice and Collection聽(Yale University Press, 2016). The Medal聽is given for a landmark academic achievement in any of the humanities and social science disciplines supported by the Academy.

滨苍听Venice and Drawing聽Professor Whistler聽challenges long-standing assumptions about Venetian art and the status of drawing, as an art and an act, from the Renaissance to the age of the Grand Tour. Her analysis shows that 16th-century Venetian artists and writers had a highly developed sense of the role and importance of drawing in art.
